randomness exercise
The snow drifted casually from the pale blue sky; fall was slowly turning into winter. There was something about the young man who strided under the bare trees that made time seem to contently slow down.
He had that carless smile. His head seemed to be in the clouds, dark eyes drifting into the haze of white fluff.
If he had purpose then it wasn't apparent - no backpack, but he was in first-year university. In fact that was Eric's destination: off to an buisness seminar, but Eric didn't care about buisness and buisness felt likewise; his marks said it all.
No, Eric had another passion, well, quite a few, as his head was always in the clouds.
Nearing a street corner Eric decided with a slight nod to himself that indeed, that particular day, would be his day.
A young man Eric hadn't had many days of his own in his short eighteen year life-span. Leaving home for university had been a welcome relief from his disruptive family, but had also forced him away from his friends; Eric was completly alone.
Crossing the street with a spirited spring in his step, Eric bumbed into someone - a rather grouchy someone.
"Watch it - asshole!" the youngster swore, stepping ahead.
Eric was abou to mumble an apology when he stopped himself.
"Hey kid," he called out after the short rugged boy, "you need to learn some respect - don't you think?"
The youngster spun around. "What?"
"Respect," Eric asked again, trotting up beside him onto the sidewalk, "heard of it?
"Shut-up," the kid snapped, heading off down the street.
Eric sighed for a moment before chasing after him. "You deaf?"
"Leave me alone," the youngster growled while cutting into an alley; Eric followed.
"You should listen!" Eric shouted, trying to keep up. That's when he noticed that they were nearing three guys about the same age as Eric, maybe even older.
"Yo, bro," the middle guy said, "who's your friend?"
"Not a friend - a jerk who wont leave me alone."
Eric wouldn't give up. "I wouldn't have to be a jerk if this kid would just listen to me," he urged.
"Oh?" the smooth-looking older brother replied, "Maybe he doesn't want to listen."
"Well, yeah, that's the problem," Eric said, shrugging towards the young boy, "He's showing no respect, in fact, this all started 'cause he called me an asshole."
"Really?" he asked, lifting a brow.
The youngster rolled his eyes while one of their friends began laughing. This one asked with a grin that exposed a missing tooth, "So you mean to tell me that you chased him down demanding respect?"
"Exactly."
"Who the HELL cares?" the youngster splurted out impatiently, "I just want him to go away!"
His brother yanked on his shirt, pulling him under a tight head-lock.
"Quiet Randy," he urged with a big smile, "you just go on ahead now, and we'll catch up to you."
The brothers stayed at one another for a moment, the eldest still with a white toothy grin that stood out against his dark skin.
"Fine, Luke," Randy finally agreed, whislt struggling to break free, "Meet you there." And he was off down the alley brooding.
"Rick, please follow him," Luke promted his silent freckled friend. Nodding, he briskly took leave.
"Nol."
"Yes, my Prince?" Nol, the one with the missing tooth prompted.
"I believe we owe this fine gentleman an apology."
"Yes, I believe we do, sir."
Luke hastily put his arm around Eric while Nol paid him a slick frin that bared no teeeth but made his asian eyes curve in a somewhat cute gesture.
The "prince's" hazel eyes stared into Eric's while he said, "That's what's wrong with kids these days - no respect."
"Aye," Nol nodded in agreement as they all began to follow the path Randy had taken.
"But I respect you..." Luke promted.
"Eric," he supplied hastily.
"Eric," Luke's smile widened and so did Nol's, "suits you!"
"Thanks," he replied, bemused.
The mood rapidly changed as they turned a corner that lead into a dead end.
Luke looked around nervously, as did Nol who turned to face away from the dead end.
"You see, Eric, I need more people like you in my company," Luke said while checking for any exposed windows; there were none.
"Like me?"
"Yes, like you," Nol answered, back still turned, "confident, respectable, and possessing some amount of perssistance and fortitude."
"Thanks."
"No, thank you Eric, you see," Luke lead him deeper into the dead end. "I am a Prince."
Eric stared at them both for a moment before nodding. The two looked at one another.
Nol asked, "And you don't find such a concept strange?"
"Why should he?" Luke blurted out, "Anyway, Eric, would you like to come to my nation and assist our people?"
The young man didn't even hesitate. "Of course."
"Excellent," Luke exclaimed with a large smile, the nervousness no longer apparent.
"Yes, indeed this is wonderful!" Nol agreed, also not as edgy.
"Then, follow me," Luke promted while holding out a hand into the dead end. A rift suddenly opened and swallowed the three, the snow drifted delicatly in the spot where they had stood.
